VILNIUS MARATHON HISTORY
DANSKE BANK VILNIUS MARATHON - BIGGEST RUNNING FESTIVAL IN LITHUANIA
The story of international Vilnius Marathon goes back to 2001 when Lithuanian Athletic Federation organized first mass run Maxima Cup, which became the predecessor of Vilnius Marathon. In 2004 Vilnius Marathon debuted as a feast for runners and Vilnius city people alike. The event was positively met by Vilnius City Municipality, which saw it as a way to foster healthy lifestyle, to add a new festival to the city event-calendar and to put Vilnius on the lost of respected marathon cities worldwide.
The distance of 42 km 195 metres first covered by runners in Vilnius September 11, 2004, opened a new page in the history of Vilnius city. A little over 200 professional and non-professional runners from 10 countries around the world joined the event.
In 2006 half-marathon distance was added to the program.
Vilnius Marathon became member of AIMS in 2007.
Vilnius marathon race course record of 2:21:15 was set by Richard Rotich from Kenya in 2007. Record for women of 2:45:31 was set by Diana Maciušonytė Lobačevskė Lithuania during 2008 Vilnius maraton.
