U\u017eupis is the smallest district in Vilnius and is separated from the Old Town by the Vilnel\u0117 River. Formerly a troublesome place in the early 1990s, U\u017eupis has grown into a beautiful neighbourhood of artists, intellectuals and entrepreneurs. On 1 April 1997, residents of U\u017eupis decided to somewhat sarcastically declare independence. An independent republic has to havemoney, power, an anthem and constitution, and above all, a free spirit. You will find all of this in U\u017eupis.<\/p>\n

Make your way under the U\u017eupis Bridge to have a go on the Swing of Destiny and make sure to say hello to the Mermaid of U\u017eupis while you\u2019re down there.<\/p>\n

Brief History<\/strong><\/p>\n

In 1996, a group of students from the Vilnius Academy of Arts founded an art community in a house along the Vilnel\u0117 River. The initiative received a lot of support, so in 2002 the artists and the Municipality of Vilnius agreed to establish the U\u017eupis Art Incubator together. This place is famous for its open-air sculptures and installations, which are constantly changing. Come get inspired, laugh and step outside of your comfort zone.<\/p>\n

The Gediminas\u2019 Tower<\/h2>\n

The symbol of Vilnius is visible from many spots in the Old Town and is portrayed in numerous works of art. It is one of the best places to see the magnificent panoramas of Vilnius. Climb Gediminas\u2019 Hill and admire the sunset or go up even higher to the top of the Gediminas Tower for more spectacular views. The red roofs of Vilnius, the church towers, and the narrow streets of the Medieval Old Town are a stunning sight. The tower houses a historic exhibition displaying reconstruction models of the castles of Vilnius, an armament, and iconographic material of old Vilnius.<\/p>\n

Gediminas Castle Tower is the most frequently visited branch of the National Museum of Lithuania. Its exhibition invites visitors to learn about the history of Vilnius as the centre of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, and also to take in the most spectacular panoramic view of the city.<\/p>\n

As the visitor climbs up the narrow steps of the tower they will discover several levels of exhibits presenting the development of the Vilnius Castle territory, as well as exhibits of Baltic jewellery and important military artefacts.<\/p>\n

The second floor contains the interactive exhibition \u201cVisual timeline: a look through the Windows of Gediminas Tower\u201d, which invites visitors to experience an attack by Crusaders; they can also see what Renaissance Vilnius looked like and compare this image with a panorama of the Upper and Lower castles from 1785, a time when these buildings had already lost their political importance. This journey is an opportunity to experience the changes the city has gone through from the 14th to the 21st centuries \u2013 by both looking through the tower windows, then at the tower itself.<\/p>\n

On the third floor visitors can experience what it meant to stand in the Baltic Way \u2013 one of the most memorable of the big anti-Soviet demonstrations, when, in August 1989, close to 2 millions people linked hands from Vilnius to Tallinn.<\/p>\n

From the Tower\u2019s observation square a panorama of Vilnius opens up and it seems as though one can hold the city in one\u2019s hand. And the fluttering national flag reminds us that Gediminas Tower is a symbol not only of Vilnius, but of Lithuania as a whole.<\/p>\n

Gediminas\u2019 Castle Tower is the remaining fortification tower of the Upper Castle. Legend has it that the Grand Duke Gediminas dreamt of an Iron Wolf howling at the top of this hill, which he took as a prophecy of the great city th<\/p>\n

The Glass Quarter community was formed in October 2018 in the area of Stikli\u0173, M. Antokolskio, Gaono and \u017dyd\u0173 streets. Its purpose is to organise cultural routes, tell hidden stories about Vilnius Old Town, establish traditions, improve infrastructure, and attract investors and individuals interested in Old Town culture.<\/p>\n

The 600-year-old square that once occupied most of the present Old Town was a Jewish neighbourhood of goldsmiths, glassblowers, artisans and financiers. The Goldsmiths Guild was founded there in 1495, followed<\/p>\n

by the first glass manufactory of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in 1547. This historic community was na<\/p>\n

med the Glass Quarter in 2018, recalling the times when there were as many as three Stiklo streets: Stiklo 1, Stiklo 2 and Stiklo 3. As if hidden among the bigger streets of the city, the quarter is still surrounded by jewellers, local artists, artisan shops and workshops, cosy restaurants, the headquarters of the chamber orchestra, art galleries, and<\/p>\n

Kazys Varnelis House-Museum<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n

At first glance, the house\u2013museum of the Lithuanian \u00e9migr\u00e9 artist and collector Kazys Varnelis looks like a small residential building. In fact, though, it contains more than 40 exhibition spaces combining antique graphic arts, maps, Western European sculpture and painting, historic furniture and Asian artworks, as well as Varnelis\u2019s own optical art compositions.<\/p>\n

Kazys Varnelis (1917\u20132010) was born and raised in Lithuania. During the Second World War he left to study in Austria, then later moved to Germany, finally settling in the United States in 1949. There he developed his mature style and became a well-known representative of op art as well as a passionate collector of antiques and rare books. After more than half a century in the emigration, Varnelis returned to Lithuania in 1998. He took residence in a building on Did\u017eioji Stree<\/p>\n

t in Vilnius and began to establish a museum in it. The artist worked continuously on improving the exhibition, creating unexpected and contrasting combinations, with time turning the museum itself into a work of art.<\/p>\n

Today the visitor can independently explore fourteen of the museum\u2019s rooms; others can be<\/p>\n

\"\"\u00a0viewed witha guide, which requires advance booking. The extended tour offers the opportunity not only to become acquainted<\/p>\n

with Varnelis\u2019s painting and collection, but also see his 10,000-book library and the artist\u2019s unique studio space.<\/p>\n

The Kazys Varnelis House\u2013Museum is the first such Lithuanian museum created by a collector and alsothe only branch of the National Museum of Lithuania dedicated solely to art.<\/p>\n

The Vilnius University<\/h2>\n

One of the oldest universities in the world, Vilnius University, has 12 faculties and around 23,000 students. The Old Campus houses the University administration and 3 faculties – History, Philology, and Philosophy. There is also a library which was founded in 1570. It contains more than 5 million prints and ancient manuscripts. Among them is one of two copies of the first Lithuanian book known to exist – the original Catechism of Martynas Ma\u017evydas.<\/p>\n

Brief History<\/strong><\/p>\n

Vilnius University was founded at a time when the Reformation movement was spreading in Lithuania and Jesuit monks were invited to fight the Reformation. The monks of the Jesuit Order quickly took education into their own hands. And founded a college in 1569 before establishing Vilnius University in 1579.\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

The Vilnius University complex took form over several centuries and therefore consists of Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and Classicist buildings. The architecture of the medieval palace contrasts with the cheerful student atmosphere. Thirteen patios, arcades and galleries complement the complex. The courtyards are named after prominent university students and professors; memorial plaques have been erected in the Grand Courtyard to commemorate them.<\/p>\n

During the 15th, 16th centuries and the first half of the 17th century, the Palace of the Grand Dukes was a political, diplomatic, administrative and cultural center of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania.<\/p>\n

At the beginning of the 19th century, at the initiative of the tsarist Russian administration, the residence of Lithuanian rulers was destroyed and restored only in 2013.<\/p>\n

The National Museum, at the Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania four main routes can be viewed that reflect the functions of this historic residence.<\/p>\n

Abundant findings, along with models of the palace, and iconographic material are displayed in the palace’s exposition of historical and architectural development (Route I). The palace’s exposition of historic representational interiors (Route II) will bring visitors to the representative halls with restored historical representations of late Gothic, Renaissance and early Baroque, as well as a special treasure hall.<\/p>\n

Route III consists of three exhibitions (armament, everyday life, music) and the Event Hall.<\/p>\n

Here you will learn about the fortifications and the collection of armaments of the castle and palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania. Another exposition reveals the daily life of the inhabitants of the castle and palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania. Here you will learn about the structure of the palace kitchen and dining peculiarities. Alongside you will enjoy the musical heritage and tradition of playing at the Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania, which will be presented in separate events at the Event Hall at the end of the route. On Route IV you will find the Museum Exhibition Centre, which displays significant national and international exhibitions.<\/p>\n

Brief History<\/strong><\/p>\n

A wooden settlement stood in this historical place in the 4th-8th centuries, while in the second half of the 13th century, part of the settlement became a stone castle. In the first half of the 14th century, it became the most important building in the large area of Vilnius Lower Castle which is surrounded by a wall. From the first days of Gediminids, almost all Lithuanian\"\"<\/a> rulers resided here. They repeatedly expanded the castle, and at the end of the 15th century, they began its fundamental reconstruction.<\/p>\n

Originally Gothic, the 16th-century residence of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania became a grand Renaissance palace. In the first half of the 17th century, they also acquired early Baroque features. Vilnius was one of the largest hubs in Central and Eastern Europe at that time. In the middle of the 17th century, the Moscow army destroyed the palace and during the period from the end of the 18th century to the beginning of the 19th century, the palace was completely destroyed.<\/p>\n

The former office of the KGB Deputy Chief of Internal Prison on the museum\u2019s first floor includes an exhibition of documents, photographs, maps and other items depicting the Sovietisation of the region in 1940-1941. The exhibition dedicated to the guerrilla war of 1944-1953 introduces the territorial structure and military organization of the guerrilla units, the aspirations of freedom fighters, their daily activities, and their everyday life. The NKVD-NKGB fight against armed resistance is revealed in the Unfair Fight exhibition.<\/p>\n

The museum\u2019s second floor has an exhibition dedicated to the imprisonment of Lithuanians in gulags from 1944 to 1956, deportations from 1944 to 1953, and KGB activities from 1954 to 1991.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>The Museum of Occupations and Freedom Fights was established in 1992. It is the only such museum in the Baltic States, housed in the same building where the repressive Soviet authorities NKVD and NKGB-MGB-KGB worked from the second half of 1940 until August 1991. The building\u2019s basement contains an internal prison-interrogation isolation cell where residents of Lithuania who seemed suspicious to the occupation authorities were imprisoned from the autumn of 1940 until 1987. Visitors can get acquainted with the exhibition, which was set up in the former death penalty enforcement room.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Toy Museum<\/h2>\n

The first Lithuanian Toy Museum, located in Vilnius\u2019 old town, not far from Cathedral, in B. Radvilait\u0117 st. 7\/2, is divided into an archaeological space, containing the oldest toys, the ethnographical space, showcasing 19th-20th century toys, while the third space is introducing toys of today. The collection contains both original and copies. The copies especially deserve a special attention as in the exhibition they will allow to carry out the principle idea of the museum which is to touch\u2013take\u2013learn about the exhibits.<\/p>\n

Brief History<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Toy Museum is the first family-oriented educational centre in Lithuania dedicated to the heritage of toys and games.<\/p>\n

The Toy Museum exhibit space amounts to 150 sq. m. The museum is visited by over 18,000 visitors per year. The museum has three thematic exhibitions: \u201cThe Oldest Lithuanian Toys\u201d, \u201cJourney to the Stone Age\u201d and \u201cMemories of the 20th Century\u201d.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>The public enterprise Toy Museum was established on March 8, 2010 by archaeologist Povilas Bla\u017eevi\u010dius and his wife Indr\u0117 Jovai\u0161ait\u0117-Bla\u017eevi\u010dien\u0117. The basis of the initiative was Bla\u017eevi\u010dius’ dissertation “Toys and Games in Lithuania in the 13th-17th Centuries Based on Archaeological Data”. With the approval of the Vilnius City Council, the museum was opened to the public on December 7, 2012.<\/p>\n

The building, which houses the museum, was built around the end of the 17th century, and in the 18th century, it housed the residential buildings and outbuildings of canon Antonovich, as well as a brewery. In 1785, they were bought by canon Rodkevi\u010dius, and his family owned the building for about 150 years.<\/p>\n

Vilnius\u2019 newest museum is a must for modern art lovers and those interested in seeing works by modern and contemporary Lithuanian artists. Designed by renowned architect Daniel Libeskind, the MO Museum is a work of modern art in itself and has already won several architecture prizes.<\/p>\n

Visitors can explore exhibitions of modern Lithuanian art that reflect a broad range of styles and ideas, as well as the main processes and developments in Lithuanian art over the last 60 years. The majority of the artists represented in the collection are still active today and are recognised both in Lithuania and abroad. The exhibitions change r\"\"<\/a>egularly to reflect different artists and themes. Visitors can also attend film screenings, educational activities, concerts, and events for all age groups.<\/p>\n

Brief History<\/strong><\/p>\n

Built in 2018, the MO Museum is a gift to the public from Danguole and Viktoras Butkai, avid collectors of modern Lithuanian art. It is one of the newest additions to the collection of museums in Vilnius and features over 5,000 works. Plus, the museum also houses a digitally restored fragment of a 1972 fresco created by Algirdas Steponavi\u010dius and Birut\u0117 \u017dilyt\u0117.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

This unique open-air art gallery is a long-term interdisciplinary project and cultural initiative that presents urban culture in an original way and creatively revitalizes the post-industrial New Town. The initiative seeks to present creative alternatives to traditional art forms, such as paintings on factory walls, installations, sculptures, performances, and non-commercial film screenings. At the same time, Open Gallery encourages Lithuanian and foreign artists of different fields to cooperate with each other.<\/p>\n

Brief History<\/strong><\/p>\n

Open Gallery is a project belonging to the art factory Loftas. It\u2019s a long-term interdisciplinary project that brings<\/p>\n

\"\"\u00a0together talented Lithuanian and foreign artists for creative work and has developed into an international open-air gallery of street art, sculptures and installations. The gallery is located in the courtyard of the former Elfa factory, where the art factory Loftas is now l<\/p>\n

One of Open Gallery\u2019s main goals is to revive the former abandoned territories of the city for new life, thus revealing the unprecedented face of the Lithuanian capital to residents and guests of the city. The gallery is free of charge and open to anyone at any time.<\/p>\n

The Cathedral Basilica of St. Stanislaus and St. Ladislaus<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n

This shrine is a symbol of Lithuanian baptism. The Cathedral Basilica of St. Stanislaus and St. Ladislaus is built in the very centre of the city on the site of a former pagan temple and next to Vilnius\u2019 defensive castle.<\/p>\n

Lithuania\u2019s patron saint St. Casimir rests in the Cathedral Basilica. Jurgis Matulaitis served as the basilica\u2019s bishop from 1918 to 1925. On 4 September 1993, the Holy Father John Paul II began his historic apostolic journey through Lithuania at the Vilnius Cathedral.<\/p>\n

Brief History<\/strong><\/p>\n

Vilnius Cathedral was rebuilt several times as a result of frequent fires, wars and unstable soil under its foundation. Due to the building\u2019s importance, many prominent foreign and local architects and artists led the reconstruction projects. The building currently reflects the Classicist style (architect Laurynas Stuoka-Gucevi\u010dius), but its walls have traces of Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque.\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

A 57-metre tall bell tower stands right by the cathedral and is one of the symbols of Vilnius.<\/p>\n

The history of the bell tower dates back to the middle of the 13th<\/sup>\u00a0century: the defensive tower that stood here in the 16th<\/sup>\u00a0century became a bell tower and got its current appearance at the beginning of the 19th<\/sup>\u00a0century. The city\u2019s oldest clock at the top of the tower chimes its bells to invite people to mass. An exhibition inside the tower recounts its history and offers visitors a spectacular view of the Old Town.<\/p>\n

The Hill of Three Crosses<\/h2>\n

Standing atop the hill that bears its name, the Three Crosses memorial consists of three white reinforced concrete crosses that are visible from afar. Climb the hill and you\u2019ll see vast panoramas of Vilnius Old Town. Plus, the Bernardine Garden and Vilnele River are right at the foot of the hill. This 12-metre tall monument has become a symbol of national identity, but the crosses themselves are often illuminated in different colours to commemorate special events for Lithuania and the world. So whenever you can see the monument while walking around the city after dark, take a look to see if it\u2019s lit up in special colours.\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Brief History<\/strong><\/p>\n

A wooden castle was built on the hill in the 12th<\/sup>\u00a0and 13th<\/sup>\u00a0centuries, and a settlement was later established in its place. The hill got its name after Franciscans died as martyrs when pagans tied them to crosses and threw them down the hill. The three crosses were erected to commemorate this event. The current monument was created by architect and sculptor A. Vivulskis in 1916 and rebuilt in 1988.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Standing 48-metres tall, the hill is one of the highest points in Vilnius Old Town, making it a perfect spot to get a 360\u00b0 view of the city. On one side you can see the red rooftops of the Old Town, and on the other the modern city with glass skyscrapers and the Neris River flowing. This is also your chance to see the Vilnius Cathedral from above. Visitors can either walk up the hill or take the funicular.<\/p>\n

The castle is famous for its gothic architecture and its special location \u2013 it stands on an island on Lake Galve, one of the deepest lakes in Lithuania. The view of the historic structure is straight out of a fairy tale. You can reach the castle by crossing the long wooden bridge. In the winter the lake freezes over and becomes a natural skating rink. You can also take in a special view of the castle from a yacht.<\/p>\n

Brief History<\/strong><\/p>\n

The castle was built in the 14th<\/sup>\u00a0century and served as a residence for the Grand Dukes of Lithuania. However, the structure fell into disarray in the 17th<\/sup>\u00a0century and was only rebuilt in 1951. In 1962, the castle became a part of the Trakai History Museum.<\/p>\n
