On Sunday, the 22nd edition of the country’s largest running event – the “Swedbank Vilnius Marathon” – will kick off in Cathedral Square, Vilnius.
Right in the heart of the city, participants will be welcomed with 5 different running distances, and for the first time in the event’s history – a walking distance.
Taking place every year on the second Sunday of September, Lithuania’s largest run will once again invite runners, walkers, and spectators to an all-day sporting celebration. This year’s program offers 5 different distances for both beginners and professionals: the marathon and half marathon, as well as 10 km and 5 km races, plus a 200 m children’s run for kids aged 2–12. A new addition – the “Swedbank” 3 km walk, leading participants through the most beautiful streets of the Old Town and city center, following the marathon route. Another important update – thanks to the main partner “Swedbank,” all participants will be insured against life and accident risks during the event.
Event Program
From early Sunday morning at 6:30, participants will be able to pick up their race numbers in Cathedral Square, and those not yet registered will still have a chance to sign up. The first and main start of the day is at 8:30 AM – for marathon (42 km) and half marathon (21 km) runners. Right after, at 8:45 AM, the “Swedbank Walk” will set off. From 12:00, the children’s runs will take place, followed by the 5 km start at 2:30 PM. The event will culminate with the 10 km race at 4:00 PM, finishing around 6:00 PM.
Event Village in Cathedral Square
On Sunday, Cathedral Square will be buzzing with activity – here participants can pick up their race packs, register, store their belongings, change clothes, or use the medal engraving service. Sponsors will also host engaging activities and attractions.
The “Swedbank Vilnius Marathon” Village is open not only to participants but also to visitors. Children will enjoy temporary marathon tattoos, face painting, origami workshops, and other fun activities. Many sponsors will invite everyone to spin the prize wheel for a chance to win. Participants can also enjoy refreshing ice baths, recovery tools and creams, and learn about genetic tests for athletes. Charity tents will also be present for those wishing to donate to a good cause.
Traffic Restrictions
For runner safety, traffic restrictions will be in place on certain city streets from midnight until 8:00 PM on September 14. To minimize disruption, traffic will reopen in some sections of the course as early as 3:00 PM, once the longest distances are completed. Participants and residents can view the detailed traffic scheme online.
Travel to the Marathon – Greener and Cheaper
For participants and supporters traveling from other cities, partners recommend using buses or trains, while Vilnius residents are encouraged to use scooters or public transport. This helps avoid congestion, parking shortages, and additional charges.
Intercity service providers “LTG Link” and “Kautra” are offering a 30% discount on tickets to and from Vilnius on September 13–14. Discounts apply with the code SWEDBANK, when purchasing tickets via the operators’ websites or mobile apps.
Mobility platform “Bolt” will also offer participants and spectators a 30% discount on electric scooter rides. On September 14, each user can apply the code SWEDBANK twice – for arriving at and leaving the event.
An Event for Spectators, Too
The Vilnius Marathon isn’t just about running – it’s also about the spectators. Each year, runners are cheered on by thousands of supporters with creative signs, clapping, and chants. Organizers invite everyone to join the celebration – come to the race course or the start/finish zone in Cathedral Square, support the runners, and help create a welcoming and active community.
Watching the race can be both exciting and fun – and for many, it’s just the inspiration needed to take the first steps toward a healthier, more active lifestyle.
